Clicking noise - handle bars/forks

There is an annoying clicking sound coming from either my handlebars or the forks. I can't quite locate it. When I pull back on my bars it hardly clicks at all, but when I lean on them at all, it clicks quite a lot. It is not a regular click - frequency varies, and it does not seem to be coming from the wheel.

Any ideas? I got my bike last October - if there is anything wrong, is it on them?

Could be

1. Cabling rubbing together/against the head tube.

2.Stem/bars not tightened enough

3.Headset loose - brake on and try rocking the front to see if there is any play.

A stupid one, that took me a while to discover, was a slightly loose headset cap. Which needed a bit of thread-lock in the end.

Think it sounds like '2'. My bars are tightened with some sort of specialist tool - should I take my bike in to the shop?

I have a similar issue with a rhythmical creak/click since I dropped my stem and put the spacers on top rather than below the stem, the top "plate" doesnt seem to sit as nicely as it did previously, despite it definatelly being seated correctly, im assuming the spacer has a different "bevel?" to the top of the headset. It creaks when I pull up on either of the bars in an alternating pattern to counter my pedaling action, its annoying, Ive been wondering what it was for a week or so, yesterday dropped the bars more, sound louder this morning, so I listened best I could, appears to be this top cap.

I post this here, because maybe its something as simple as this on your bike

Nice one Betty - I will go through that.

Think it is the head set - but I don't own a big spanner - will borrow one tomorrow.

Not seen them in the flesh but don't they need hex keys to adjust them?
OOps! You were right - it was hidden under a plastic thing. Got someone with a bit of knowhow to have a look. Need to use hex key, then spanner to the bit with the cone in (sorry for being so technical!) and then spray some teflon lube top and bottom apparently, If I am not on here for a while it means I have knackered my bike and am crying my eyes out!
