I know knee pain has been discussed many times, but I've noticed this year my knees seem to be grinding and clicking more than in the past, especially after rides of about 40 +. Does anyone else experience this, and have you done so for quite some time? I don't suffer with knee pain that much, just now and again. My partners knees sound worse than mine, she doesn't cycle but has rode horses all her life. I wonder if it's something that just happens when doing certain activities. Or if I should be getting it checked out.

Unless you are in pain, then I wouldn't bother.

Joints are clicky, worry if the clicking is causing pain. That's what happened with my shoulder - click and crunch lead to pain, operation eventually fixed it.

Now if you are getting knee pain from long rides, then this can be entirely normal if you aren't doing the distance regularly. My knees were very sore the evening and day after the Manchester 100, but absolutely fine after that.

If riding is causing pain, then it's worth getting checked out.

My specialist, who eventually operated on me, was constantly saying 'joints are clicky don't worry about it, the pain will go' - it didn't as my shoulder needed decompressing. No pain then don't worry.

Oaf on a Bike
Ive noticed that my knees click when i bend my knee if my leg muscles feel stiff when my hams and quads are tight at the same time and pulling on the knee, if i stretch one or both it seems to stop.

Fast and careful!
Ive had knee pain and ankle problems in the last year nothing serious but a few lessons I've learnt as i got older,
first make sure your bike is set up correct,or if you run you have good trainers,if you do over do exercise listen to your body it needs to rest and repair,if you have a problem or pain think about why it hurts or how it happens,i then go to the physio,
make sure you stretch before and after, when muscles get tight they can damage i.e. my calves were tight due to riding, ignored it ran 40 miles over a week and bang my achilles tendon where it joins my ankle gave me big grief,a bit of stretching and care by my physio I'm a new man again, but if you ignore a pain you seem to inherit a secondary injury,
some riders think reel men don't stretch, believe me by stretching down after a ride will save you in the long term,
most muscles in the legs if they get tight can eventually effect your knee, when you ride,i have improved my flexibility in my legs with pilates and this has helped my legs,a trip to a physio will alleviate any fears a good deep muscle rub, repair and exercise prescription will make you feel new,two visits always seems to get me going again normally costs £80 but to me money well spent,
good luck and safe riding
