As the good man above says, it means 'beyond category' - hors catégorie.

It simply means that you should tackle it one way only, down the way!
This is one of the truest things that has ever been written on CC.

I believe the story goes that it was the gear needed for a Citroën Traction to get up the hill but it only had three gears, and they found they needed more categoies and had to invent ''hors catégorie'' - beyond or outside category. I like the old rock climbing categories - hard, severe, hard very severe (or was it VHS?), extreme - because they have a descriptive aspect that number will never have.

I rock climb and I reckon that there are only 2 climbing categories. Them I can get up and them I can't.
