My Sister in law gave me a set of Speedplay Light action pedals for my new road bike. I have SPD pedals on my Hybrid and never really liked them. I also got a pair of Speedplay ready shoes and when I attached the cleats to the shoes I put them dead center. However, I see there is a fair bit of leeway available in placing them on the shoe. Is there any rule of thumb for where to place them front to back or is it just trial and error based on comfort?

You usually start with the cleat under the ball of your feet (where the toe bones meet the foot bones) and then work back towards the arch if you experience discomfort.

You can also adjust the Q factor (the overall distance between the two feet) but keeping it centre is usually good enough.

There are a lot of theories about cleat position if you want to confuse yourself by googling them.

I am plenty confused already. Thanks for your advice. I will check to make sure the cleats are aligned with the balls of my feet.
