I just scrapped by SPD's on my fixed purely because I need shoes I can walk in and don't like to have to carry trainers to the supermarket with me ;) One think riding fixed with cleats teaches you is to hit a moving target, I no longer have to freewheel on my roadie to clip in.

there's a more obvious answer.

Learn to clip in/out with either foot. Very quickly you work out which side is up as you come to a halt and unclip accordingly. Then you may just need to move the pedal slightly for best take-off position. If you cannot clip out both sides then you're probably SOL.

I never ride fixed anywhere near anyone's wheel... although on a geared bike I ride about a tyre-repair patch from elder son's wheel.

I find the fixed-gear just doesn't want to stop in a hurry.

I would have though the reverse would be true! A fixed has presumably two brakes plus "back pedalling". I speak from limited experience in that I was v prudent in my 4 weeks or so of riding fixed gear I rarely needed to brake other than lightly (except on downhill stretches of course)

Come to think of it clipping out wont be a problem.
I'm better at clipping in with my right foot and prefer to lead with my left. So no point clipping out left.

Sol?

SOL = S*** out of luck

I've never had an issue with only unclipping on the left, just use the brake to spin the pedal into place.

My fixed stops less quickly than my roadie, but I choose to only run a front brake.
Though I become a pro skid stopper in emergency stop situations, just can't seem do it by choice.

I use SPDs with my really old shoes for commuting. At weekend, I change pedals and use Look Keo pedals with my good shoes. That works for me. I can't track-stand and I'm too old to learn now, but I don't need to. SPDs seem to slip in and out automatically as soon as I think about them.
