In the modern Britain where almost everyone has electrickery, there is no need to move the time so people don't have to go to school or work the fields in the dark.

I've often thought that it would be simpler to adjust time- and daylight-sensitive work to the best hours and adjust them at the best time. Schools should use the optimum times for child safety (usually a matter of road safety). Don't change the clocks, just the alarms.

In essence, BST is organised getting up an hour early by lying to ourselves about the time.
I know. But changing all the clocks around so work and school appear to function at the same time seems daft to me. We only need to adjust our alarm clocks really and many jobs aren't time or light sensitive anyway.

No but if, as an example, I get up and go for the first train of the day, it is no good getting up an hour earlier unless they agree to run it an hour earlier. Moving the clocks is the easy way to do it.
If you're already catching the first train, would your (hypothetical) job need to change its hours? I'm struggling to think of examples.

Still have two clocks that weren't changed last time, for six months I have just taken an hour off every time I look at them, at least they'll be right again tomorrow

Why is it not needed? If not, which would you prefer, needlessly dark winter mornings or needlessly early summer sunsets?
The question here should be is why is it needed. A good % of us now live 24/7, while when it was brought in we were daylight people. At the end of the day we will still have X amount of daylight and dark what ever time we call it and because of our way of living will still use the same amount of energy. On a personal bases I have always found it takes a few days to adjust my body clock. As for what I prefer, I have no preference as long as we keep it the same and not do a twice a year change.

So which do you want, dark winter mornings or earlier summer sunsets?
The thing here is that the dark winter mornings or earlier sunsets don't change. We only change our orientation to them. Whether changing this orientation in block, all together on the same day, is a good or even necessary idea, well.... I suspect we'll all continue to go to work at the time that suits our company and clients best.
