As some will have probably guessed I'll be moving to Newark on Trent shortly. The question is do I move close to work or futher away and get a decent cycle?
In Dublin and here I've stayed close, which is very flexible but takes self discipline to get a ride in.
In Edinburgh I initialy stayed with my folks 17.5miles away but then moved fairly close (3.2miles)
Still cant work out what I prefer

Close - you can always have a long and medium length route - there is no rule that says you have to go straight to work and then straight home. It's easier to make a short route long than a long route short

I'm retired now but used to commute 12 miles each way and then, after a job change, 16 miles each way. These days I ride 20 miles or so fairly often and occasionally a lot more.

In between here and there
My criteria will always be 15-17 miles from home and either SW or NE of work to make the most of the prevailing wind..

Mainly because I lack the discipline to ride past work and then back!

In between- as mentioned there are times be it fatigue/ weather/ commitments that mean I wish I could get home sooner- and it's a lot easier to add some distance on than take it away.

I've always thought a 20-40 min commute is nice (~6-12 miles). If you feel like going further on a 20 min commute, you just add a loop in. However, sometimes you have to get home, and 20 mins isn't a long time.

I think so much depends on the roads, traffic conditions, weather, when you have to be home or at work, etc

Hey, and Newark is pretty nice, always liked it.

I don't commute, so know absolutely bugger all.........
but, like others have said. If you are nearby you can always go further, whereas in the depths of the miserable weather you will be home quicker and out of it. If you want to go further just change your route home.
I too liked Newark, my folks lived there for a while.

In between, as it is far enough to rack up decent commuter mileage if you do the direct route and is very easy to extend to a decent ride when you feel like it.
