Closest Pass of the Year?

This is my closest pass of the year. I think it was an intentional attempt to knock me off, nay, I am certain this was the case. Witness has the same opinion. The car twitched my sleeve.

I believe the registered owner didn't formally identify the driver, and is going to be asked to a formal interview.

I usually like to think the best of people, put it down to a genuine lapse in concentration, etc and don't dwell on it but I can't there, that was nasty
Edit: and judging by your posted speeds you'd been flying down there and the road was empty, so it couldn't even be put down to frustration :ohmy:

Well, I wasn't that fast on the bit at the start of the video, but it wasn't me holding him up there, it was just time and the learner driver. Shortly after his pass I was doing 40mph, so no wonder he felt he had to run the red light to get away from me. Even the witness was surprised at just how quickly I was back with them.

What a fabulous post.

If Helmet camera users restricted themselves to only ever uploading truly dangerous driving, such as this, rather than examples of all dubious driving, or human errors, they'd have more support and make a bigger impact.

That video is horrifying. It was close enough to make you wince, but the speed involved just made it scary. Had the worst happened, you wouldn't have 'Fallen off' you would have been 'Thrown from'. Fabulous bike handling too.

Trouble with that is twofold:

- the oneupmanship of some riders claiming they've had closer, or drivers/non-cyclists seeing it as an acceptable overtake (sadly a lot of people still think this way)

- many cameras have many different lens configurations. A very wide angle lens can make something appear further away than it is, again misleading the viewer into thinking an overtake as being safe. Parts of the vehicle may not appear on camera but the rider knows that vehicle has been right by their thigh before moving back out at an angle - on the video it wont look so bad and misleads.

The above is an example of what I mean. I had noticed the vehicle behind me drifting slightly, and assumed they were holding off, however as I'd looked forward (if my memory serves properly) to check the road ahead he's decided to cut me up. You can see how I brake about 40 seconds in.

Glad everyone posting is okay. Some nasty and dangerous driving on show. Makes me so glad i don't commute and spend about 85% of my cycling up steep hills and down glorious descents. ^_^

My only gripe is that with a lot of these videos, or videos on youtube, the cyclist sometimes feels the need to chase and then confront the driver. This also sometimes leads to risky cycling in order to catch the driver and usually ends with a heated argument. In some videos the cyclist comes off looking just as bad.

I must add that of the above posted videos, most seem to be calm and intelligent cycling.

Always? It rarely happens.

It might sound completely stupid, but sometimes it can be a good incentive to get yourself to do a sprint and push yourself a bit harder.

I don't say anything to drivers unless they say something first, but I will chase after cars and re-overtake them if they have overtaken me pointlessly and/or dangerously (coming up to a queue of traffic, squeezing past me at a pinch point at a speed difference of 2mph etc). Usually find it gets me in the mood for pushing harder the rest of the way, especially if I'd been slacking before.

The last thing I would suggest is putting yourself back in front of someone that has already shown they drive dangerously around you.

Oh I don't do it antagonistically, I don't look back at them or say anything as I pass, but I will pass on the right hand side and make sure they have seen that their driving didn't get them anywhere any quicker.

Usually it's just dopey drivers who might possibly (though unlikely) learn something. Only very rarely do I get aggressive drivers who will make a succession of bad passes possibly deliberately, and even still I usually beat them in London traffic.

Plus, it also gives them a second chance to prove that they can overtake safely. I'm all for self-improvement and that.

benborp, that second video of the guy overtaking on the zebra crossing is just bloody crazy.
I wouldn't have believed it unless I had seen it.
That person needs his license taking away for a very long time and a hefty fine.
