Co2 cylinder + long valve = fail.

Afternoon all.
I have always carried a couple of threaded Co2 cylinders, an adaptor and a spare tube. I`ve always used short presta valve tubes, the ones with the threaded washer to fix them to the rim. On the couple of occasions I`ve had to use the cartridges there`s never been a problem.
When I was in Halfords buying de-icer etc for the wifes car, I picked up a spare tube from their cycle section. It turned out to be a long, non threaded valve type. Thought no more of it.
Puncture on the way in to work Thursday morning 05.30 (minus 10 degrees the guage said). Fitted new Halfords tube ok but when I unscrewed the Co2 adaptor after inflation, the whole valve core came out, instantly deflating the tyre again! Replaced the core and tried again with the second cylinder, only to get the same result.

Never had this problem with the short valve tubes and don`t know if this fault is specific to Halfords long valve tubes or whether most/all long valve tubes are the same design.

Needless to say Mrs merlin wasn`t overly thrilled to receive a phone call at 6am on a freezing winters morning, asking to bring me out a new tube and the track pump!!!!

She did come to my rescue however and is now anticipating something extra special from father X-mas.

It depends on the make of tube, it's not just limited to long valve tubes. I had this problem once and couldn't re-inflate my tyre.
From now on i always check the valves on the tubes before i buy them, if i buy online i always buy specilized as i know they don't do that.

Reading this makes me think I should test my co2 inflator before I need to use it in anger!

Removable valve cores aren't that uncommon, LOL! I assume your screw-on CO2 adapter unscrewed it?

You could have just screwed it back in and pumped the tyre back up again, surely? I have a push-fit CO2 adapter to avoid this problem.

I tried that with the second cylinder and the same thing happened. I think because the temperature was so low and Co2 is cold by it's nature, the valve kept unscrewing when I undid the adapter. Rusky, there was no problem with the Co2 adapter, just wrong tube selection I think.
