Brandane

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
I think Parks of Hamilton might be looking for a new driver after this:

Have to feel a wee bit sorry for the driver involved, but he really should have known the height of his vehicle, and the height of the bridge!

This incident (in the OP) has led to an item on the radio this morning in which people are invited to 'phone in their "interesting" experiences on buses, the driver in question has not 'phoned in.....yet.

Some years ago an Italian HGV driver tried to drive through a medieval archway into Salisbury Cathedral close, causing a lot of damage to the arch. And he's not the first to try, judging by the condition of the stonework.

I found myself explaining to my elderly Mum who lives in Salisbury that many Italian truck drivers probably wouldn't think twice about driving through a medieval stone arch in their home towns.

And not the first to do it, judging by the state of the warning markings.

I did see mechanics resorting to the famous ''If all else fails let the tyres down'' approach for a lorry jammed under the railway bridge at the end of Trundley's Road.

That's how they got the lorry out from under the bridge.
You can see someone in the pic looking at the tyres.

Seeing as it's a Park's of Hamilton coach my reaction is:rofl:.

The nearest I have ever come to having a crash on the motorway was thanks to one of their drivers so I'm afraid I have little sympathy.

There was the (in)famous one many years ago of a driver who usually drove a single decker who took a double decker out one day and forgot about the extra height. But then there are plenty of cyclists who have tried to drive into their garage or under a barrier with their bikes still mounted on the roof of the car.

There are a couple of bridges that got misjudged so many times that the highways authority have installed infrered height detectors and flashing overheight signs before the last turn off before the bridges. Hasn't stopped it though as at least once a year some dopy driver following his satnav gets it wrong:rolleyes:.

Arch

Sadly, I've done it myself! We sometimes have to hire a van for work, and I'd done this particular street (well, a courtyard, through a low arch with a flat over it), in a low roof Vivaro before.

Next time we hired a van, they gave us a high roof version...

Very very embarrassed and cross with myself. No damage to the arch, but a dent in the van. Thankfully, Budget don't care much about such things - the last time we got a van from them, the chap said "Here's the vehicle defect sheet.... Ah, don't bother...."

In Portsmouth we had a very dodgy roofing company on Goldsmith Avenue, who killed one of their employees on the A 27 when racing their vans, they also demolished a pedestrian bridge. by Victoria Park

The bridge was then rebuilt and within a week the same company demolished it again!
