Naming and shaming eh? Sounds good. I did my first Great North Run in September and I told everyone I was aiming for a time of 2.30 although I was secretly hoping for 2.15. In the end I did it in 2.22 so my face was saved, but you're right it did concentrate my mind. If you publicly commit to something it is much more difficult to back out.
