I agree. Just because you have gears doesn't mean that you have to use them. Couldn't the purists just stay in one gear but still have the option to change if they want to. I don't understand the current fixation (no pun intended) with sigle speed and fixed wheel bikes.

So blinking cold here today and yesterday. Bought another pair of gloves so now wearing two pairs (North Face and Polaris) and hands still very cold. Kept having to stop and warm my hands up in shops... Mainly the tips of my fingers.

Is it normal for the freewheel to be frozen over night? Any problems with just riding it and forcing it loose?

Mighty cold on the way back and dense freezing fog too. Had to stop several times to scrape the ice of my glasses!!

You shouldn't feel bad, it's not the time of year for taking the scenic route. I do feel a bit inadequate sometimes compared to some of the commute monsters on here, but this morning the thumbs started to cease up at 4.5 miles, and I was able tell them to just be patient for another few minutes...

I'd love a fixed bike because they look really pretty and pimpable. Coloued chain? Yes please!

I have about 20 gears on my hybrid but tend to use the same three or four except when I accidentally ride it on an audax and then go through every single one to get me up tiny hills because I'm tubby and unfit. I push it up the slightly larger hills whilst men twice my age fly by.

Very cold in Coventry this morning and very cold and foggy this afternoon, but apart from a bit of frost no ice yet. On the fixed in the cold my legs are reluctant to spin, which takes the edge off my speed a little, but I wont be riding gears till the spring.

I have to begrudgingly admit that fixed's can have a certain minimalist elegance to them. In some cases. However if I got one or even just a single speed I would have to have it in a really low gear to ensure getting up hills without getting off.

Reading that makes me a little happier to admit that I was way too warm yesterday. Goretex fleece gloves were ok but i think the Polar Buff was a step too far with three layers on my top half (although still only thin poly-cotton trousers) and I was sweating like anything by the time I got home.
