I have a colleague at work, who I don't see much as she is in another department cycles in. I have noticed on her bike that she has installed some lights. While it is highly commendable, there is a slight problem. The red lamps are on the front and the white one is on the rear. Which is technically illegal, however I am in no position myself to preach about lighting regulations due to the non-existent pedal reflectors.

I am probably going to answer my own question, seeing it when I go in is bugging me and I really want to say something. I will probably use the s*** sandwich by commending her that she has lights, then mentioning that they are the wrong way around and that she could get ticketed for it, not to mention that it is potentially dangerous.

Just ask her why. It's not like it's difficult to get right, after all. You don't need an advanced knowledge of the highway code or UK transport law to know that white lights go on the front and red ones on the back.

Do you think she would notice if you swapped them around?

(I mean if she hasn't yet noticed that everyone else's are the opposite  )

Pedal reflectors are a legally required irrelevance but white = coming toward me, red = going away are fundamental safety conventions.

tell her

Of all the times I've been pulled over on my bike, the lack of pedal reflectors, or reflectors or lighting of any kind, has not even been mentioned.

Offer to help. Instead of pointing out where she has gone wrong, ask "Would you like a hand swapping those lights around into the correct positions?"

Then again, she may be a salmon cyclist.

make it seem like you are doing her a favour and saving her a ticket from a cop, which technically you are doing.
also you'll stop her getting blood on her nice cycling clothes when some chap flattens her because it looked like she was cycling away from him not towards.
