When I worked at a large electric & gas supply company, I put in to a couple of whip-arounds for people leaving. One was off to university at the age of 50. I had worked with him for 2 years & we got him a book voucher for his studies, about £100 worth, he was popular. Sadly he didn't make it to Uni, he died of a brain hemorrhage 2 days later. Lovely chap.
The second was a lassie going self employed and we bought her a voucher for EWS or Sally's. She was off to be a beautician.
When I left they had a whip-around too, as I was going off to be self employed. I was hoping for a nice helpful voucher and the lass in charge of the pressie buying went to Clinton's Cards got me a giant fluffy bunny

Not sure why. Maybe she thought that I was going to be 7 or something. I gave it to a friends child but was quite tempted to leave it on my chair at the desk I no longer worked at. It was nearly 2' tall, I had real issues getting it to ride pillion on my old Kwak.
The rule of whip-arounds in the office was only ask on the teams that worked together and others that the 'leaver' knew. I said 'no' to a couple of them as I had absolutely no idea who the person was and they worked on a different floor. No-one was offended if someone said 'no'
