Collision this morning...

While peacefully cycling along this morning a van left hooked me. I'm largely unhurt, bike seems fine, driver did stop and exchange details.
I have reported to police and to my cycle insurance but looks like there will be no claim (I don't want to push it but it was the driver's fault; left hook across cycle lane without indicating!)

The only part of me that took any impact was my right upper-arm. It is starting to look a bit bruised and unhappy, but I think this can just be done by putting an icepack on it. But, just incase.... can anyone suggest where is best to go and get it checked out? GP? Walk-in? A&E?

A&E if you are not in a hurry.
Walk in if you are in a bit of a hurry.
GP if you are patient enough to persuade the receptionist that you need an immediate appointment.

check out the local minor injuries unit. generally quite quick

I'd personally go to my walk in GP and ask them to check it out for you. Hope you feel better soon and this incident hasnt dented your confidence.

Give it a couple of days before deciding there's no damage too - last time I was hit, my arm had swollen up to about double size by the end of the second day after the collision.

Shame, much sympathy to you!!! I got knocked off on Sunday by a taxi trying to squeeze through a pinch point, so am also sporting a class bruise.

Thanks. I think they'll just tell me to go home and put an ice pack on it but it's pretty warm and is turning purple, so I might try to get it checked out today.
It was fairly low speed luckily and we were both going in (sortof) the same direction!!

The best place to go will vary depending on what's available locally. My nearest walk-in is excellent, and if I had your problem that's definitely where I'd go. My nearest A&E is awful and my GP might give me an appointment before Summer 2012, so if it was down to them I'd probably just treat it myself.

No, it hasn't yet. I might decide to go the slower/longer route to work if I leave later than normal though (usually this route in the morning is quite quiet and fairly trouble free - but this morning I was late and there was more traffic, and indeed more turns!). I already tend to avoid the area at night as it's a nightmare with cars parked all over the place.

Speaking as an employee of the NHS, if it's not an emergency (it seems like it isn't if you're ummming and ahhhing about going at all) then definitely opt for the walk in centre. Although if you think it might need an xray they may send you to A&E anyway depending on how well equipped the walk in centre is.
The GP will only probably send you elsewhere anyway.

Glad that the bike's ok though and you seemed to not sustain too much damage to yourself, so I wish you a speedy recovery.

Er... that's where I was headed! Well, MRI walk-in centre. I've been to MRI A&E before, when I broke my foot last year falling up some stairs - wasn't too bad but it was early on a Sunday morning!

Yeah, that's what I would do, except bizarrely in Manchester the walk-in centres are harder for me to get to than the A&E departments (although it seems there's now one at the MRI, so I'll head there later).
