Just in case it's any help, I've done lists of quite a few of the cols and routes I've ridden round Die, south of the Vercors plateau, in the south east French pre-Alps. You'll be able to read descriptions and see photos of the cols, and gps maps from the links.

If you're thinking about a September get-away, you could do much much worse than a few days in the area. It's looking gert lush.

I've got a house near Die - have just returned from five weeks there. Back out in October.

I did the 5.5% av gradient Col Du Vent from Aniane a few years back, so beautiful. The descent was scary to say the least. Nothing like some of the beasts you have listed, but I am fitter now. This was about 4 years ago now and I had no style whatsoever!

Incidentally, the photo in my first post is of Vassieux-en-Vercors. And whilst it looks like a lowland plain, the town is actually at about the same height as Scafell Pike, being on the beautiful but often damp Vercors plateau. The view's from Col de la Chau.
