Television these days really is, in the main, a load of old rubbish.

I think this depends on your perspective. Personally, I watch or record things I'm genuinely interested in and would never have the TV on for the sake of it.

"Traditional" television, your paltry amount of channels shovelling second hand tat from your loft, depressing soap operas and casually racist/sexist "prime time" gubbins on a Saturday night still exists, and as you say is a load of old rubbish.

However, get beyond that even with a basic package and the good far outweighs the bad. Last night's viewing took me from the Great Barrier Reef to Victorian London via a harrowing documentary about Internet abuse.

That goes for most French TV, even Madame Oldbloke (a Frenchie) prefers UK TV

I agree, French TV is rubbish. I watch it sometimes on Film on but mostly to see French films.

Antiques Roadshow and Flog It are two stalwarts for a bit of mindless TV. I love watching people who think their bit of tat is worth a fortune being told it's just a bit of tat. However much they suggest they're happy with the £20 valuation, you can see the disappointment in their eyes.

Fact is, most tv outside of the UK is rubbish. Whingers in this country don't know they're born. They should try living in, say, Turkey, or Brazil for a bit. When they & Murdoch finally manage to kill the BBC, they will.

Anybody been watching the new French series " Spin" on more 4, Friday night? I like it, very good.

Yup! That Walter Presents... strand has some good stuff in it. Nice to see Gregory Fitoussi again too. If only they could have found a role for fellow Spiral alumna Audrey Fleurot.

Even without the paid packages, there's some great stuff available for free from All4 (which is now, thankfully, as good at showing you the programmes as it is at showing you the advertisements) including belters from the back catalogue. There's a lot of great stuff in iPlayer too, although (one assumes to appease its paymasters) the back catalogue isn't so strong. Film 4 usually shows at least one watchable film each week. Add radio into the mix, and you have the fantastic documentaries that pop up in R3's Arts strand, R4's "Seriously" strand, dramatisations of Pratchett, &c &c &c.

Crap daytime TV shock.


My rule of thumb is that TV is not worth watching until after The One Show has finished. Then you may stand a chance of finding something OK.

At the moment every time I put it on all I can find is Dave Gorman- but not complaining at that.
