not in the UK - though I have cycled down the A1 from Scotland into England which was not as bad as expected...

But we ran into a silly scenario in Hungary that in order to enter Serbia legally (and leave hungary legally) we had to cycle down the autobahn to get to the only border crossing which had been moved from the local road to the motorway! Expecting to be yelled at at the crossing we were simply asked if we had enjoyed Hungary and stamped out of the country without issue!
We ended up with the same problem leaving Serbia (in Serbia the road was a dual carriageway) entering Macedonia (where the same road was a motorway and with no way off it for 25km or so!) and ran into issues due to a bridge being out in Greece and had to cycle down a major E road that was motorway in sections, even the police could not come up with a route we could use to told us to carry on...

There was a lone cyclist pedalling round the A1 Western Bypass on Saturday morning up past the Metro Centre... with at least a half mile tailback behind him as lorries and cars queued up to pull out to pass him as he pootled along in the [very] slow lane.

many moons ago i was being driven down the M61 toward Manc when i noticed on the opposite hard shoulder, a motorcycle copper stood next to his bike, looking back down the carriageway... "What's he looking at?" I thought, only to see the soon to be pulled cyclist riding along the hard shoulder towards Preston and the awaiting copper. maybe it was the same bloke, trying not to make the same mistake twice?

It says in the article "we don't know where he was going" Did they not think to ask him?!

:reading: I DID IT !!!!!! ......................in 1981 along the M.56  Me and a friend had our tyres let down and the valves taken out ( remember them ) so the quickest route we thought was to walk along the M.56 to get home, sadly the copper in the early two door Range Rover ( remember them ) said get off at the next bridge,oh the good old days !

The article also said "It was not known how the man got onto the motorway". "He had walked about half a mile and was picked up between J23 & 24", so it was known how he got onto it? He used the junction.

Has anyone cycled along the cycle path along the A580 (past St Helens towards liverpool)? I always think of that as cycling on the hard shoulder.
