Well done to the Pars, some crowd there today, nice to see!

Don't watch Thistle much these days but Dunfermline seem to be the best team we've come up against this season..... but the First Division is sinking fast into complete mediocrity. Dundee or Falkirk for next season, the rest of us are just so skint.

Well done today.

Why are you nicknamed the "PARS"?

ED
Good question ;-)

“The Pars” Nickname

In my view, Dunfermline have one of the strangest nicknames in Scottish football, ‘the Pars’. Even more remarkably, there is no clear indication as to where the nickname originates. There are plenty of ideas, see which you one you prefer as to where the Pars originated.

1. At one time, the team were playing so badly that they were nicknamed the “paralytics”, which was then shortened to “the Pars”.

2. When the club changed its strip to its now famous black and white stripes, the name “Pars” was used as a shortened name for parallel lines.

3. In the early part of the 20th century when the Rosyth Naval Base opened (Rosyth is around a mile or so from Dunfermline), sailors from the south west of England came to watch the Athletic and unfurled a banner reading “Plymouth Argyle (Rosyth) Supporters”. Hence the “Pars”.

4. When Dunfermline gained league status they were called “the Pars” because they were now on a par with other teams.

5. When the team first wore their black and white stripes, they were called “the Pars” because their colours resembled the parr, which is a type of salmon.

6. In January 1913, local rivals Cowdenbeath were involved in a courtcase over the lease of North End Park, which was Cowden’s home at the time. Their solicitor asked Cowdenbeath’s secretary if they were on a Par with Dunfermline, to which he replied “higher up”, which, so goes the theory, caused banter between Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath fans, resulting in the nickname. This theory is funnily enough the one which Cowdenbeath fans tend to believe!
I think I've also heard the theory that the local cricket team were nicknamed the Pars and the football team originated from that; that doesnt explain why the cricket team were called the Pars ;).

Raith are well organised but I don't see them keeping hold of Tade et al., as much as it pains me I think it'll be Falkirk's league next year. Hamilton have all ready sold McCarthy & McArthur. I think Dundee are a bit of a dark horse. Partick will be up there though, its just a pity that their finances aren't great. I'd like to see the SPL go to 16 teams, and give teams like Partick a chance but I doubt that'll happen unless Aberdeen are in the relegation spot ;)

I no longer go to games don't enjoy as much as i did but i remember your last game of the 1988 season .
You were sadly relegated and your last game was against my team Celtic.

Your fans displayed a Banner that read: "Happy Birthday Celtic
P.S. Jim --We'll Be back."

If only all fans were as positive.

With the current situation in Scottish football friendship and humour is saddly missing.

Good luck for the title and Next Season.

Who's this Partick you speak of?! I take back my well done message from yesterday

Can't see the SPL ever trying 16 teams, but this playing teams at least 4 times a season has long since become mind-numbingly boring. The crowds at Firhill are terrible these days, there are a few contributing factors but the sheer repetitiveness at ever increasing prices must be a big factor.

Partick Thistle FC, the Jags; sorry I don't know what else to call them
I've heard a lot of people saying similar; playing teams at least 4 times a season (and maybe in the cups) is boring. I think and a lot of other people do to that a 16 team league playing just twice a season (home and away) will be more exciting but the current SPL chairman (I forget the muppet's name) seems focused on 10 and grabbing more tv money.

SPL needs more teams not less. 16 would do, with the likes of Pars, Bairns, Dundee, Raith, Jags making up the numbers. Playing everyone 4 times is boring. (Killie will have played Gers 6 times this season with two cup games). Also share out the money more evenly. One third of all the SPL money goes to the top two teams. Giving a bit more to the others would help them improve and compete with OF.
