I saw him perform at a comedy club about 4 years ago. He was hilarious, had the whole (sell out, mixed ages) room in hysterics and did not swear once. Was happy to chat with folks at the bar afterwards too.

Most comedians of that age developed their skill in Working Mens Clubs and similar that were uncompromising with those not up to standard. Every comedian has had a bad night, but no one came through that experience without being good at their craft. It did mean that many comedians developed their skill in working with a live audience, but those skills did not necessarily transfer to TV audiences. But it certainly developed a thick skin and a work ethic that is way beyond what we could appreciate.
In our teenage years we regarded the Chuckle Brothers as a punishment on kids, but a colleague told me of their tireless post-performance work in talking to the kids and signing autographs, particularly after a pantomime.
I don't think we should disrespect any comedian of that era. Even if we didn't find them funny. Except Tommy Cooper. Can't work out why anyone would find him funny.

Agreed. I have seen Mick Miller 3 times over about 40 years. ..each time more or less same act....each time hilarious.
Can't fully agree on Tommy Cooper though. In my drinking days my go to joke was a Tommy Cooper one: Doctor told me to get some exercise and suggested yoga. I went to the class and she asked how flexible I was..."well, I can't do Tuesdays" ,.....always funny after many pints 😁😁
