Been rather enjoying the weather on my 'bombproof' hub gear, studded Winter tyre, steel, tank of a bike. Yesterday cycled to the school to collect youngest and walked back with him. Around the corner from home decided to cycle the last bit. Got on bike and nearly fell off as pedals wouldn't turn. Hub gear had siezed, but not too concerned, figured some water ingress and pushing it back through snow had frozen internals. So took wheel off and brought it indoors to warm up.
Nada, nothing, will not budge, not prepared to try and force. Spent morning transferring studded tyres, and reassembling bits, to frame I'm selling as haven't yet got all the bits for my KM 29er build. Took wheel to LBS in case it was just me but definitely siezed up and, as is still under warranty, I can't risk them taking apart. So now got to send wheel back to Roman Road Cycles in Wales for repair/replace. Spoke to them and no ideas yet, this will be the first I-9 that developed a fault for them
Though they were very helpful I feel it's going to be a drawn out process. This was my only concern when buying the SRAM was the lack of local support, compared to an Alfine.
Even though I had no need to go anywhere last night, or this morning, I felt bereft. Backup bike in bits ready to go on KM frame, or be sold, and weekend bike with 23mm slicks about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. First time I've been bikeless in a year and I felt really limited, irrationally so. Didn't feel remotely settled until backup bike was restored to functionality and I had the wheel all packaged up for sending back. Won't be properly settled until I have two bikes back in action with racks and tyres to cope with rougher conditions. I originally intended to amass all parts for KM build before taking apart existing backup. Then decided that main bike was so reliable I was being overly cautious. It would appear that 'sods law' is alive and well.
No point to this other than 'I need a hug', though Wigsie need not apply
