...Shorter?

Currently cycle 5 miles each way to my work 4 times a week, just been told we are most likely moving office to within 1-2 miles of my house, i should be glad of the office moving closer to my home but it does mean less cycling, think ill just need to extend my route in the morning and afternoon in order to keep doing the same  This is when you know you love cycling too much lol

Anybody else had their commute made shorter?

My commute is 12 miles door to door, but I always do 18 miles in the morning and between 14 & 17 in the evening dependent on how I feel. I have worked out some good timed routes home. If I ever do the short route I do feel as if I have short changed myself.
Strange really.

Im not sure i would do extra in the morning cause getting up in time to do my 5 miles can be a nightmare but might start doing extra in the evening if the move goes ahead

Most people are from the area my office is in and as you can imagine aint too happy about it being moved further away  but for around 3-4 of us it does mean alot less driving/cycling, and the boss did mention showers so that might be a small bonus :becool:

I could do my commute in under 10 miles (though the term suicidal would be applied anyone who tried that route on a cycle). Most direct viable route is around 12 miles, quickest route (assuming an 19mph or better uninterrupted cruising speed) is 13.7 miles. I end up doing about 25 miles in the morning & 15-20 miles on the way home.

1-2 miles? That's barely long enough to get hot & sweaty!

I dont think i could do that kinda miles every/most days  I barely get sweaty on my 5 mile commute as it is, i would prob only use it on cold mornings to warm myself up

I live very close to work, about 3km direct but I still manage to average 42km a day commuting to work and as it gets warmer my daily distance increases.
There is an advantage of being so close, in the event of a family/house emergency I can be home very quickly, in fact it takes me longer to get the bike/me ready than it does to get home.

Suppose thats one way of looking at it, i will most likely take the scenic route home most days especially when the better weather arrives

It will also mean im closer to my 2nd job on a friday therefore i dont need to leave job 1 quite as early to get to job 2 and less miles done in the car on fridays or days i dont/cant/havent got energy to cycle in

I hate missing a day's commute, and my ideal distance is around 20 miles. Mornings are a touch over 17, as I go the direct (but hilly) way. Evenings I come back along the river as its calmer, prettier, and doesn't pass two radio masts.

The office has moved 4 times in recent years. Initially, we were in Victoria (14 miles each way, 3 days a week). We relocated to the Fulham Brewery (off Hogarth Roundabout) which bumped me up to 17 miles each way, still 3 days a week. The Gasworks off Kings Road became our next home at 15.5 miles, and I resented the drop in distance, so started coming home the long flat way for an 18 miler. Now I'm in Chiswick proper, and have restored the miles to their rightful place.

I'm also doing 5 days a week now. On the flip side, my obligations in/outside of work don't leave much time to fettle things, and at 190 miles per week before I've even played on the weekends, squeaks become dead components pretty quick.

Andy.

When I first started off my commute was 17.5miles one way, I generally took the train in the morning and cycled home. However I moved to just 3.2miles away and enjoyed the flexibility that came with that, being able to extend the route or take the direct route when I was running late or wanted to go somewhere after work.

I live 1 mile from work. Usually extend route 3-8 miles.
However as BRSU said it's very handy if I have to get home quickly, or weather is particularly bad!

I have a ~100km commute, so I take the train, with a 5km ride to my "home" station. Most days, I make it more interesting by getting off the train a stop early and riding the last 18km to the office, then doing the same in reverse in the evening. If I do there and back every day for a week, that adds up to over 200km. I don't often get the full house but it gives me a warm glow when I do.

Sometimes I mix it up - instead of getting off the train early on the way to work in the morning, I get on it late, ie by riding 26km to a different station down the line rather than my home station.

Occasionally (mainly in summer), I do different longer routes after work - the longest I've done took me halfway home. I've not yet tried riding all the way home, unless you count the time I hung around after work to join the FNRttC that just happened to have my home town as its destination.

Then there are the times like a few weeks ago when the trains were buggered and we were all turfed off. Rather than try to get my bike on the replacement bus (which probably would have been impossible anyway), I rode the remaining 40km home. Even better, I had the mother of all tailwinds, so it was a lovely, very fast ride, even though it was pissing with rain. Instead of getting angry about the incompetence of Southeastern Trains like my fellow commuters, I got home with a great big smile on my face.
