Off work today. Went to a course on using Finance Coordinator (accounting software for churches), which was in Wolverhampton, 17 miles from my house.
Of course I had to cycle it. Glorious start to the morning - sun shining but cold enough to make firing up hills a necessity. Followed the instructions from memory without having to consult the map once, I managed to find the canal near Sandwell and Dudley station without any problems at all. And then the canal - low mist hanging no more than a foot above the water, with the sun still low but shining brightly and blue sky above.
30 minutes earlier than expected I arrived at my destination, so shot off into the City Centre to run a quick errand. Got back to the Science Park - three Sheffield Stands just by the front door and no other bikes, a shower room to change in, and free coffee and biscuits when I registered.
And same again on the way home - 17 miles of canal-side peacefulness and suburban Birmingham with faster roads.
Feel great. Other than failed to start a conversation about cycling to the destination from South Birmingham. My wife understands that 17 miles is a nice distance to ride, but looking at some of the people there, I doubt if many would contemplate 17 miles as a day's outing.
