I do it, though I make an effort to make it look like it's my normal speed.

Who does it openly? who does it on the sly? Who can't be bothered?

Let's have you.

Openly, if I can!!

I'm still gutted I didn't capture the video of my passing Mr Bianchi last year, that was a worthy little sprint. At least for me!!

I don't race as such... if I see someone in the distance I might use them as a target to aim for if I think its possible (just to speed me up a bit out of pootle mode), but I don't have to pass everything in sight. On the other hand I'm quick at accelerating so I am often the first away from a set of lights, but if its up hill I know I probably will get overtaken later (this morning it took about quarter of a mile before the bloke caught me up and overtook) and it won't bother me. I seem to be better at short speed bursts than constant good speed output.

But I don't like sitting behind someone on a damp day if they haven't got a mud guard - if I'm that close I will always over take them.

I got done by an old bloke on touring bike last week (I ride a hybrid). He was stationery at the lights. I timed it so that I was rolling when the lights changed. I blasted it and ran away. This geezer suddenly caught up 200m later and cruised passed as if I was going backwards.

I couldn't believe it - he wasn't even sweating.

You can tell when its happening, two commuters nonchalantly ambling along at a leisurely 30 mph, steadfastly ignoring each other whilst hoping that the other one will turn off soon so they can stop and puke in the gutter whilst gasping for oxygen.

Bike ahead = must catch and overtake even if it kills me. I have refined my tactics and now sit in for a bit to catch my breath before launching a killer overtake. Sad I know - but it enlivens the commute.

I will try and catch everyone in front of me and over take.

I find it helps me get to work quicker, adds some excitement but also gets me working harder than I would if there was no one to catch.

The problem is when you overtake someone who then sticks with you, and you are already at the limit ....

I had this couple of weeks a go, caught him, we were doing around 20 mph and then stayed behind for around 500 yards, then made my attack on a slight downhill.....

Smugly over take and then he sticks with me, were doing 24 on the flat, I am flat out so he don't over take me again

I am praying the lights one mile down the road are at red ! but I slowed a little but he never re over took me, but what work out, never got that down the gym.

Makes the whole commuting to work so enjoyable.

I was tailed by a roadie going home earlier this week - I had passed him as he was filtering on the left of cars who had stopped at the lights (I was overtaking on the offside of the cars - much easier and safer there) and he caught me when I too stopped at the lights.

The lights changed and off I went at my usual pace up the slight incline through Hulme (couldn't hear him behind me after a bit) only to have him catch me again at the next set of lights.... round the bend and left him again until the next set, and the next and the next.

By this time I was aware of his heavy breathing when he stopped about 3m behind me each time, and was sure he was trying to stick with me... looks like a little race was taking place...

The lights changed and off we went up another longer incline through Stretford which culminates in yet more lights. I stepped up the pace a bit up there to see if he was keeping with me... but when I stopped at the lights it was clear he was miles behind by then.

He caught up just as the lights were changing and off I sprinted up the sharper hill and over the crest to the next set of lights... I looked back to see him in a different lane and making his way over the hill... but it looked like he had given up somewhat.

Got the pulse racing for a while and made for a more exciting commute home.:biggrin:

I love commuter racing.

If I see anyone in the distance it does give you a bit of enthusiasm to see if you can catch 'em.If they have carrier bags hanging off the bars then I know I've a chance:biggrin:

I love commuter racing. ;)

+1

The problem with roadies (Moodyman?) is that they hate being passed by old guys on tourers, so they'll jump lights, go up the inside of busses and basically do anything to avoid the humiliation.
