That sounds like a pretty horrible experience - I have heard stories of people coming across wires setup like this (whether for this purpose or not I don't know) on the Bristol-Bath cycle path. Moral of this story... beware!

About ten years ago I went through some fishing wire that had been tied to a lampost/tree either side of a segregated cycle path. Being tall and riding upright at the time it snapped across my chest, but if I'd been shorter or riding lower then it would have been my neck/face that got it, almost certainly throwing me off. The local police had received lots of similar reports, though I didn't hear of anyone being seriously hurt.

Little scrotes! I'm glad in the PC's case they caught them.

Another reason why main roads are much better for cycling than people think. Actually, I wonder if I'd be almost immune to this particular risk?

I don't mind cycling at night in fact I quite enjoy it but there are certain areas/ paths I'd stay away from. In a discussion with the recently deceased CTC Lothians leader she was telling me about the time on the path behind Muirhouse she had a half brick thrown at her and quite a few other tails of washing lines tied across the path. The worst I've had is there is eggs thrown at me and their aim is poor and the usual glass all over, but after talking to the CTC leader, I started to use the road more!

there's odd people around late at night, and odd people driving home from clubs/pubs/parties that wouldn't dare in daylight

I wouldn't go into a park after dark on my tod and I'm a big brave type, I wouldn't ride on a cycle path in the dark either, I don't in daylight either mind

kids arsing around is bad enough without proper nut jobs

Done a few leisure rides at silly hour, but stick to main roads at that sort of time.

This summer, I almost did a ride along the local canal (I've got a powerful to see light) but wife wouldn't let me go if I didn't stick to the roads. Glad she talked me out of it as there are plenty of ambush points.

Like Tynan, I'm also a big lad, but wouldn't fancy my chances against a surprise attack

In my Student days I used to have a lovely early morning commute in Coventry, from Bagginton (where the airport is), back into the city centre. Picture it: 1am, mid january, fresh snow on the ground, not a sound to be heard for miles! I took the opportunity to stop and sit down and enjoy the peace and quiet.

After reading that blog I'm very glad I don't have to do it anymore!

I'm a well built blackbelt and I wouldn't ride anywhere deserted or with ambush points. As others have said - it only takes one surprise attack to stun you - then it doesn't matter how well trained you are. Do what common sense tells you and keep the risks to a minimum.
