Before I started commuting by bike, I used to walk a lot (at a very fast pace, to college and part time work and pretty much everywhere else, as I hate using buses), and for some reason, my left hip started hurting. It got worse and worse, until a level when I had sharp stabbing pains appear in my hip (or somewhere around there) every few minutes or so that I walked. Then one day, I was riding my friend's bike, and noticed that the hip did not hurt as much as it did when fast walking. I decided to buy a bike and started commuting by it. Now, after about a month or two, the pain in the hip is gone completely. Now I can even do fast walks or jog and I feel no pain whatsoever. I don't know how the bones and all the little moving parts in my legs and hip work, but for some reason the cycling motions reversed the increasing pain.
I am really happy about this.
Since I switched to cycling, instead of pain I feel pleasure every second I ride. The best part of it is that the more I ride, the more I like it.
