Commuting familiars

Ever since I started full time commuting I can guarantee at least once a week I would see a person whom I do not know but we always exchange a merry wave, I even used to see him when I drove he was an ever present proper biker, I have not seen him for over two weeks and the strange thing is I have worried (not the right word a bit strong but couldn't think of another) about what has happend to him. Which I find a bit peculiar, considering we have never exchanged anything other than friendly gesture.

I know its not a change of my timing as I still see the other miserable sods going north whilst I go south.

Realised I had another one this morning - a surly roadie coming the other way as I climb the largest hill on the route and he is descends. Blanks me every day despite my attempts to give him a friendly nod/wave.

Yellow mini man has not been seen for a week or so, wonder what has happened to him.

You soon realise that, given most people's daily commuting routines can be timed to one or two minutes even when travelling by car, that it would be fairly easy to do someone ill will if you so wished. In the days of the IRA people were advised not to set patterns and you can see why. Tin foil hat off!

I have I'll call him 'Roger the Raving Roadie', saw him for what seems the umpteenth time today cycling way too fast for the conditions and dodging in/out of gaps without looking. If there's not a beautiful girl at the end of your journey, whats the rush!

1. Red haired beardy chap going the other way on the cycle path on University Boulevard in Nottingham, which is about halfway to two thirds through the first part of my commute - where I see him is a good gauge of whether I'm running on time! Saw him on the pavement before I reached this stretch this morning which worried me greatly. Only just made the train.

2. Large bloke in a blue Focus sat outside macdonalds with a coffee on the wing mirror. Only see him from time to time on my way in these days so have decided his presence is a good omen. Always tempted to snatch his coffee as the thought amuses me. Fortunately I don't like coffee.

I haven't commuted by bike much recently, but when I do, the route takes me through some nice country lanes. The regular that most springs to mind is the guy walking his greyhound along the lane...always a cheerful 'hello' from him.

I have a few

• Chap on MTB rides the other way, we nearly always pass with a cheery 'good morning';
• My time of commute has shifted a little now so a pleasant young lady is no longer about when I am though I do see her sometimes going the other way in the evening
• There are several cycles that go the other way but are either engrossed in txting, listening to their iPod/whatever or their own little world (as indeed I am mostly).
• There used to be a woman who walked her greyhound, though the greyhound absolutely hated my bike so she changed walkies time I think.
• There are two children who walk to school really early - I assume becasue their parents have to be in work elsewhere and chuck them out at 0730 or something - a lad of about 8-10 and his little sister who started the same school as him school this year.
• On one route back I used to see two chaps of 'eccentric' persuasion who always used to yell me a "good afternoon" - I miss them and haven't been that way while though when I did they weren't in their usual spot.
• Gave a roadie a run for his money the other day, not seen him since!

As far as cars go, no real familiar ones. I generally cycle the opposite way for the traffic or along a shared farcility alongside the main road; mmm thinking about it, do colleagues count?

My friend used to call his familiars his 'hello guy' - someone he didnt know but saw daily and said hello to

I've a few - two lady runners I see usually on weekend mornings on the way to work, a new Mini driver on the way home, and I tend to wave and get waved back at by most of the 320 bus drivers.

I feel jealous, no real familiars as i work shifts and my work roster is 6days on 4days off so no regular pattern!

When I saw the title of this thread, I envisaged a black cat keeping pace with you as you're cycling! .

I have some 'regulars' on my morning commute, but it's generally so early that there aren't many of them out yet. The afternoon commute is much busier, so I'm generally focused on not being hit by cars, so don't pay as much attention to what others I might have seen before.
