Hi,
I am new to the forum so hopefully I am posting in the right place.

I have turned from being a weekend cyclist to a regular commuter to work cyclist when Im not working away. (30ml round Trip from Liverpool to Southport).

The morning ride into work is great, I start at 6:30am and arrive in work at 7:35am with very little traffic on the roads with an easy cycle along on the cycle paths, particularly on the coastal part of the ride. However the ride home is a different journey all together. The coastal path again is very easy but once I get to the end of the path it turns into a full on nightmare. If I try the cycle paths back on the other side of the Formby-by-Pass, I find that they suddenly end and force you back onto a pitch black dual carriageway with vehicles passing you at 70mph. If you then travel on the cycle paths facing traffic you are faced with either being blinded by cars, coming to junctions that are complicated to cross, negotiating cyclists coming the other way and then difficulties getting back into the flow of traffic in Crosby. Last night I came a cropper as I approached the BP garage on the cycle pass it went from a wide path into a no path as I had gone to far. My mistake, by the signage along these stretches is not good along for cyclists as its non existent. (Compared to London City where I also cycle)

My question I guess to other members who may be traveling or have travelled down this route what routes do you take returning from Southport to Liverpool. I have a road bike but would consider investing in a more robust Hybrid if it made a difference. I want to continue cycling to work but the journey back is making me think twice travelling in the rush hour traffic.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Neill

I only ride that route on Sunday mornings, so I've no experience of it on dark and/or busy roads, but...

From Southport, I use the path alongside the bypass, but then turn off to the right before the path ends. That takes you towards Hightown, through Little Crosby and back to the main road by the Aldi in Crosby. Something like this:
