Commuting on foreign turf

Nothing IMHO beats cycling when visiting a different city.

For the last two years I've hired a bike when attending a 3 day conference in Barcelona & had a blast cycling to the conference centre as well as seeing the sites. Opinions of colleagues varies from disbelief to envious, and I admit to getting a kick from non-conformity when they turn up at the conference centre in business suits with me in cycling gear.

Today, had to go through from Glasgow to Edinburgh for a meeting. For logistic reasons had to use the car this morning, but stuck the bike in the back and was then able to leave the car in a car park and after the meeting was over had an enjoyable afternoon cycling around the city visiting my old haunts.

It has never occurred to me before to take the bike in the back of the car when traveling away from home but will certainly do so in future.

Agreed. If I was starting on a Monday morning, with a Hotel booked for Sunday night, (weather permitting) I would arrive Sunday morning and explore the area.

Unfortunately health and safety rules have banned it but I used to like making site visits on bike (train then bike). Part of my job involves exploring a new towns/ areas and that is more efficient and enjoyable on bike. You just don't see enough on foot and I hate stop start driving.

I try and do site visits by bike - in a couple of weeks I'll be notching up about 40 miles a day for a whole week looking at various bits of highway infrastructure around solihull. 20p a mile baby!
