Second commute of the week - The day off in between certainly helped, took on some breakfast this morning and little snack this afternoon which seemed to help. Knocked a min or so off each way not that it matters. Key for me is pacing myself and using gears to keep myself comfortable.
I cant wait for next week now - although may have some MTB fun this weekend.

ALWAYS take on breakfast. I didn't when I first started commuting and it was a real slog. Make time for breakfast and you'll feel the benefit.

Take your time - my commute takes about the same amount of time as it did when I started (about an hourish). But the difference is, you see the world. I see Barn Owls hunt this time of the year, a number of Peacocks and that kind of thing.

You're doing the right stuff... hope you carry on enjoying it!

Nice one Red. :bravo:
It's only been a couple of weeks since I started but I'm really getting into it. I've already spent far too much money on essential items and accessories so for this month at least, the savings that will be possible later on with regard to fuel usage in the car will be pretty minimal.

All part of the fun really and after all, it's good exercise. :becool:
Cheers Femto - I have spent a fair bit over the last few years on bits and pieces, mainly for MTB riding but once you have got it it should last you and give you the confidence to go out and ride and make it all a little more comfortable - Good Luck with it all

.........and apparently 2 hours riding at my weight and at my speed equates to 2000 calories being burnt - More beer!!!

Hell fire that's good. I rode for an hour and a half and I calculated my energy usage in the high 400s!

Kaipaith: Yes I agree totally with your breakfast comments. It's very important to give yourself some fuel for the exercise you will be doing in the morning on the way to work. Otherwise I dare say you'll feel rather faint.

If you ride like someone is about to stick his fiery fork into your ass, then you'll burn about 800 to 1000 cals an hour.....

Still doesn't mean you can eat that lot, but if on a long ride, you'll be looking to consume that each hour over 5-8 hours......

Popped it with a 15 mile commute this morning - 1 hour 2 mins

Return journey 55 mins

Very Satisfied - Hard Work but cant wait until Thursday to go again (I have to recover tomorrow like a proper athlete - Yes!)

1hr 2mins going out, 55 coming back, yep thats a classic headwind tailwind scenario........ well done anyway. it wont really get easier, but you will get quicker........ youll see......

One can ride for 1-1.5 hours on an empty belly in the morning but you can't go all head down/arse up - you must take it easy or you'll 'blow-up'.

This slow pace burnt my body fat at a remarkable rate for 6 months or so, then my weight stabilised. You MUST eat a hearty breakfast upon arrival at work though. Porridge with honey and a chopped banana is a popular choice. Worthwhile having some protein too to help your legs recover. A chocolate* bodybuilder's protein shake is ideal.

*Legal chocolate. Yee-Ha!

Is it wrong that I am wishing away the weekend looking forward to my next commmute?
I never thought I'd think that either but I'm doing the same. Wait till it's siling it down. Commute then and so long as you're wearing the right kind of stuff and you enjoy your journey then, you're laughing.

I had a cheeky half hour on the turbo today just to keep ticking over
I decided to have a bit of a pedal along the canal towpath to Leeds today. I did 24 miles in about 1 hour and 45 mins. Wasn't caning it too much. I think my average speed works out at just under 14mph. I caught the train back and I'm not counting the extra mile up home because it's long and steep so was in bottom gear and it took quite a while.

If I'd done one more mile, that'd have been the same as a marathon. I dare say I'd been one of the back markers though!!

Never mind. We've all got to start somewhere. Now to get some proper cycling shorts cos the cotton shorts and cotton boxers I wore today might as well have been full of sharp sand.

...By the way. It looks like it's gonna up and p*ss it down tomorrow so take dry stuff for your arrival...

Good Effort Femto - You got me wincing at those shorts though, yes invest in a decent pair. It felt like I was sat in my armchair when I got my first set. Essential kit

Thanks Red. I've got myself some Endura Humvees with the padded lycra liner that clips inside the baggy shorts with 12 little press-studs. They seem to be pretty comfy. My first time wearing anything made of lycra and to tell the truth, I was pleasantly surprised. I think it'd have to be a pretty warm day for me to wear a pair of lycra shorts without the baggies over the top though.

I was gonna go for the 24-miler again today but I ended up at a friend's house party last night and what with the boxing, the taxi took aaaaages to come (like hours). I didn't get home until stupid o'clock and by the time I'd risen from my slumber, the best of the day was gone.

Here's hoping for reasonable weather tomorrow. The Accuweather site says that it's going to rain round my way at about 7am but then it should dry up until about 5 in the afternoon. I think I'll chance it.

Anyway, I need to burn off the party frivolities from last night!!
