I started commuting 8 miles each way to work around 3 years ago when I finally woke up and realised it was quicker than by car. At the time I had a hybrid and left it locked outside at 1 of the 4 unused cycle stands.

Today my company announced a secure indoor area (unused office) for the cyclists to leave our bikes in.

Over the past 3 years things have changed. The company joined the C2W scheme and we now have 9 regular/semi-regular cycling commuters.

When I first cycled I use to get abuse and the usual "why?" questions. These days all I get asked is questions like "Should I get a hybrid or road bike?", "Would I be able to commute from X?", ...

We're still waiting for the showers but things are moving in the right direction.

Still lock your bike though!!

I'm lucky to work for a company that cares for cyclists. It also helps that there must be around 50+ that cycle. We've got secure parking, showers, changing facilities, lockers, c2w scheme, a mechanical service every 2-3 months and of course towels! Yup, they provide towels for us

Can't be bad. I keep my bike in my office at the moment, but a colleague cycled in yesterday, and had his bike stolen. To top it off, someone spotted them 'doing it' but didn't alert security.

No matter where you work, no matter what industry or field, no matter how professional and seemingly well to do - you will always have someone in the workplace who thieves.

Always lock it.

You're making me feel jealous. We only have around 50 people in our office. We are in a large building though (we have 2 of 6 floors) - at the moment we're the only company in the building. I'll certainly be locking it if another company moves in (although you have started me thinking if I should lock it before).

IMHO showers are the key. Everything else you can improvise but arriving at your desk exercised and fresh feels great. Being ready to take on the day marks you out from the mass who tumble in after "problems on the circle line" or "incident on the North Circ" whose only objective is to regain enough strength to attack the coffee machine ...

Something employers should note and reward. Oh and showers mean ablutions doesn't get in the way of falling out of bed into the saddle.

I have secure indoor parking at work.. it's the space in the office next to my desk.

Nice.

Best place to lock your bike is the place you can always see from your desk!

That's what mine was until today. If I'm being cynical (and it has been known) I think the company disliked the various bikes dotted around the desks.

You're still waiting for the office masseur to ease those aching commuting legs then?
