Compression wear seems to be more effective for recovery rather than during efforts - LINK.

Having said that, I wear compression socks all the time except for when I'm in the shower, in bed, or out in very hot weather. The veins in my left leg were damaged by the DVT that I had in 2012 and wearing a compression sock helps keep swelling down. If I am wearing shorts, I wear a matching sock on the right leg because wearing just the one on the left looks stupid!
 
I think it does work for recovery and certainly helped me. Used them more last year when I was riding more and they had a similar recovery effect to a hot bath.
