Computer out of stock, dispatch date missed

Having finally plumped for and ordered the replacement base unit for my aging dual-core, it is now showing as 'currently unavailable' on Amazon. The firm's response to me asking by email when it would be delivered was that they would email me when it was dispatched. Not very helpful. No explanation as to the cause of the delay.

Amazon shows 'we don't know when or if this item will be back in stock'. My order status says I can't change the order as it is being prepared for dispatch - which is what it's said for the last week.

I'm hopeful this will sort itself before the weekend, but just in case - how long would you wait before initiating a claim for the order to be cancelled?

I paid by credit card just in case. Haven't been able to check as yet whether payment has been taken. Presumably it wouldn't be until the unit was actually sent?

Immediately. Screw them if they didn't make it clear that it was out of stock when you placed the order. There's plenty of alternative suppliers.

I wouldn't presume that at all, especially if they said that it was in stock when it wasn't. They can take payment, IIRC, up to 28 days before despatch.

Cheers Norm - kind of the way I was thinking. Blooming shame - it was a nice unit. I really don't like the way the order "can't be changed" and yet I'm left with no idea if/when it will be coming. There's something about that system that needs fixing I think.

I've had that before with an Amazon order. If the goods are in stock, it goes straight to that "can't be changed" status as soon as it is placed.

I phoned them and told them that it should be changed because I'd be rejecting the goods if they were despatched so they could save themselves some time and cost by cancelling the thing before picking them.

The order was changed.

There's a lot of good system units out there. It is a pain in the ass when this happens after you've spent ages choosing one particular unit but, IMO, you can't reward shite service and that sort of thing is shite service.

According to the Distance Selling Regulations, the supplier must fulfill the order within thirty days commencing with the day after the order was received, unless alternative arrangements have been agreed. You are entitled to a full refund should this condition not be met.

Can't you give them a ring first? It would be a shame to miss out on that base unit as it was great spec for the price... but, it is quite common for smaller suppliers to suffer from certain components being held in constraint (stuck in customs essentially), but if it is only going to be a few days then worth the wait, if weeks, cancel.

Email enquiries often get the short answer, rather than the full explaination, so a quick call should get you the full picture and allow you to make a properly informed decision.

Yes, it was/is a good spec... they're in Germany though, so I'd rather not ring at the moment. I'm waiting on a response to my latest email asking for an explanation for the delay and some indication of when they expect to be shipping. I'm not out to cancel as first option, but the lack of communication until I emailed yesterday hasn't filled me with admiration for them. If there's a problem with supply, the seller really should contact the buyer to explain - not the other way round.

Very true, but that kind of customer service is the exception rather than the rule. I'll cross my fingers for a positive reply.

Progress! The retailer has responded and says the unit will be dispatched today. Paperwork / 2-year guarantee has been emailed to me. Tracking details to follow later. Still no explanation of the delay, but if I get a good base unit out of it, that's what counts I guess.

Good news. Just as well you didn't take the advice to "screw them" for their "shite service".

I've never had any problems with Amazon myself, including returns. There again, I don't expect bargain online prices
plus the personal service of a shop on the High Street.

Having seen your earlier post, I hope you didn't go for a 2nd generation i5/i7 (2300/2400/2500/2600).

Intel pulled the LGA1155 motherboards as a defect was identified. They then let some through, but there is still the potential for these boards to fail if you ever use the spare SATA ports.

Dell have been doing some crafty marketing and offering customers an opportunity to get their order early (should they wish to keep it) by upgrading HDD and RAM specs, but using 1st gen processors which are only 60% as powerful and less efficient.

Intel pulled all non-laptop motherboards and started shipping replacements the week before last, which may well have been where the delay came from.

Even if a one with the bug is shipped, Intel will sort it out via the manufacturer before it should become a problem - how to find out if you have the defective chipset

Well, the tracking details did not come. i5 2500. And it does use an 1155 motherboard. The day just gets better and better...

I've emailed the firm asking what they have done about this.
