For those of us of a certain age who grew up in the 1960s, can't help but think that we were priveleged to have seen so much being built and developed in such a short space of time.

I work at Filton and used to work with some of the guys who built Concorde - some interesting stories about how perfect the engineering standards were and how rigourously they were applied. One of the things that made it so difficult to keep the aircraft in service was the cost making of spares and the availability of some of the material with which she was built.

Stood by the side of the runway for her last landing on a wet and stormy day but now she's stuck outside in all weathers, waiting for a permanent hangar. Shame really.

I don't think everything should be measured by its commercial success.

After all, the moon landing never made any money!

Concorde was a project that pushed the boundaries out way beyond where they were. After all it was only 25 years after the jet engine came into being and it was going at twice the speed of sound.

Formula one cars, the channel tunnel, hybrid cars similarly do not make money. Often it is not until the second generation that the bean counters get a look in. Concorde was a product of its age and the situation changed (the oil crisis) which made any further development along that line unacceptable.
