Cycling from the Hook of Holland to Amsterdam on Friday (catching the ferry from Harwich for the overnight ferry thursday night) and was planning on taking the LF1 north sea cycle route.

Just been looking at the weather and it says -1 degree. Light snow! hmmmm

Anyone have experience of the route this time of the year? It looks very close to the coast so might be icy?

Any alternative routes that you know of? Or should i just use my gps and find a road route more inland?

Thanks
Amit

If it is icy near the coast, it is likely to be more icy further inland. Parts of the LF1 are what might be considered a tourist route, the routes further inland could be more heavily used. There are countless alternative routes, I don't know about gps, but you could buy a map from an ANWB office to guide you, and a compass would help.;)

We did the route in October 2008, in weather that got progressivly colder, plus single figures in the day and minus single figures at night. We ended up having to stop once we got to Den Helder due to snow ! (we were camping! so we stayed in a hotel in Den Helder and then went on to Amsterdam)

We had several maps, the best by far was the Esterbauer Bikeline book of the route.

Most of the route is pretty easy to follow, just keep the sea on your left. But even we got lost a few times, but nothing serious.

I watched recently what was reputed to be the world's most boring video of a bloke cycling in the Netherlands in snow. The cycle paths had all been swept and cleared in the towns at least - remarkable attention to detail.

I've just found the link. It was said that it's impossible to watch all 5 minutes without stopping.

We've got one patch of snow left in the garden at the moment. It's been above zero for about a week now but the forecast is for more cold weather this week, with midday temperatures at about zero and some snow showers.

Wrap up warm.

I would not count on the route to have been swept. I live in the north East of the Netherlands, and it is treacherous right now, with fresh snow hiding patches of frozen ice underneath. On the other hand, I was in Amsterdam only a few days ago, and all was well.

I did the holland, germany and denmark tour last year. But I flew into Amsterdam and went inland bypassing zwolle, taking the ferry over a small river and through to near bremerhaven and crossed over at the usual place of Gluckstadt...There I followed the cycle route along the elbe and into Denmark..It was raining and one of the things I do remember is all the sheep and their err presents along the way....if you do travel along this and it is raining wear goggles...but it was a ok trip...eastern Denmark particulary ....this year the baltics.....
