I feel so dirty!

I jumped a red light this morning. It was about 06.15. I was cycling up to the junction and the lights changed when I was about 20 yards away. It's about a three minute change cycle. I was going to stop but as I approached the line I could see that there was not a single vehicle in sight in any direction (clear line of sight for about 100yds in all directions), neither was there a single pedestrian in sight.

So I thought, stuff it! And I went

I wish I hadn't, sorry.

It did feel oddly exciting though

I don't generally jump red lights but there's one I always do if I have to go that way (which I tend to avoid) because it's a dual lane road turning left onto another dual lane road and I have to turn right immediately. It's pretty dangerous if you're in a bunch of cars and lorries to do this. It's the sort of situation the proposed change to allow cyclists to filter left at reds is designed for if you ask me.

I filtered past a pedestrian crossing recently. The light was green for vehicles, and they were moving very slowly as was I, and looking, but still naughty!!

I did the same in the same circumstances this morning....i'm not sorry.
Any other time, i'd hop onto the path and walk the 20 yards then remount.

Does it make me a good person...no. I can live with it.

I've done it a few times on my commute, i'm pretty good at judging the speed getting to it now though. If there's nothing/no-one there then I just go for it as quick as I can.

I'll jump them depending on time and traffic. There are some real pointless ones. Like the ones to the supermarket which doesn't even open till 8am anyway so at 7am there is nothing coming out.

The supermarket near me is bad, the signals are green by default for the supermarket; even at midnight (it shuts at 6pm) and a bike won't even trigger them, yet the ones 50m down the street are very sensitive. Car will trigger them eventually but often jump the red. I've started doing it too

Shocking stuff debian.you are a marked man when it comes to any future discussions on RLJ'ing:biggrin:
I have been known to jump the odd one, though they tend to be the permanently on red type that don't recognise bikes at all, especially early morning 5am ish.

If I was to start a thread every time I ran a red light, you would all be muttering "Oh no, it's Jimbo again wasting time telling us all about his morning RLJ. Boring......."

Meh, I really shouldn't worry ...that type of RLJing I don't really have a problem with. There are some back in Norwich which are useful during the day, but at night the road is empty so they just need turning off.

I may have ignored the signals once or twice at midnight, when no one was in sight (and raining!)....."if a tree falls in the forest....."

At temporary traffic lights in Rusholme (gas mains replacement) only 1 cyclist stopped, about 20 others carried on into on-coming trafic.. (single lane)......

Think of stopping at traffic lights as extra training......
