Hi

In replacing the wheel on my triban 3 I am widening my understanding of bike tech, or not.

I'm getting Fulcrum 5 wheels but don't so far understand how this impacts on the current 8 speed cassette . shimano 2300. I can't see any real signs of wear, although it must have some after 2500m. I was planning to keep the current cassette on the new wheel. Will it fit a 10speed wheel?

I might replace the chain though.

But with a triple, do I go for a 10 speed and how many links should I go for??????

Cheers

Should be ok running a Shimano 8 speed cassette. As far as the chain length, I would go 118 links for a triple and remove 1 or 2 links if needed, but not a 10 speed chain. You will need a 8 speed specific chain and it will have to be compatible with the cassette. Ie Hyperglide. (HG)

Apparently the spacer is provided with the wheels to allow you to fit your 8spd cassette as well. Why replace the chain? Are you having problems changing gear or slipping?

I put Fulcrum Racing 5's on my Triban so yes they are compatible. Oddly the original cassette went on the wheels without the need for a spacer, but the replacement Shimano cassette needed one (you get it free with the wheels).

In terms of chains i use the KMC 8.93 - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kmc-x8-93-8-speed-chain/ - The original chain on my Triban had 106 links so you need a chain tool to shorten it, this is for a 12-25 cassette.

I replaced the original Cassette shortly after 2,500 miles due to the gears starting to jump. If you change the chain/cassette you will most likely need to re-index too.

Make sure they are SRAM/Shimano compatible. Is it not worth swapping the cassette and chain while you are at it? Ask your LBS for advice

Fitted my Fulcrum 5s yesterday. The standard Triban 3 cassette went on fine but the gator skins were quite tight going on, even though it was a nice warm day. I thought there was a delamination bulge at one point but the bead was not quite sitting right. Inflating it to 120psi popped it into the right place.

Very happy with the Fulcrums . I weighed the rear rather inefficiency on some kitchen scales, without cassette on, and the new one came in at about 963g compares to the old one which was about 1186g. Not a massive difference but the bike definitely feels lighter and looks a lot better. I am looking forward to my nemesis of a hill on my work commute to see if I get any further than usual before feeling quite Ill.
