'Rat- running' will be banned?

I wonder how they intend to do that?
At a guess it will probably mean more 'road clutter' in the from of humps and obstacles.

I expect it means they'll be put in the middle or the other side of the pavement and maybe smaller signs.

Did you not read the whole article?
The signs are meant to mean you can't cycle on the pavement. So by taking them down and replacing them they mean moving them to the other side of the pavement to make this clearer.

I find it very interesting that the layout designer felt that it was necessary to put up no cycling signs for the foot pavement - an indication of things to come or an acceptance that pavement cycling is the norm

Yes, but it's all so pointless - the need to have signs to tell people they can't cycle on the pavement, the cycle lanes painted on the road...

He described a system involving number plate reading cameras. Sets of cameras would be located on the new road, and there would be others on the city side of the Addenbrookes site. Mr Cutting explained that there would be enforcement action taken against anyone passing the second set within fifteen minutes of the first. Quite what law would be “enforced” wasn’t clear, though Mr Cutting said he didn’t envy the challenge Cambridgeshire Police will no doubt have in trying to implement the proposed scheme.

How can you enforce use of a road in one way but not in another? Put up a sign stating you must take 16 minutes or more to traverse this road??

Sadly, I can imagine some dork crawling along, taking 16 minutes, just because they think they are using a short cut and 'beating the system'.

Get back on the road, you pesky cyclist, right where it narrows from two lanes to one, and right where a lorry is cutting the corner in the cycle lane.

Enjoy!

I think it's pretty obvious the no cycling sign refers to the footpath not the cycle lane. I guess some thick or pedantic idiot with more time on their hands than healthy complained. Unfortunately the sign is neccessary for the minority of people who insist on riding on the footpath when a multi thousand pound dedicated cycle lane has been provided by you and me the tax payer.

The lane looks pretty good - wider than the usual - and is also mandatory.

I'm not sure it's that expensive though - it is, after all, nothing more than a solid white stripe on a road that has been built for cars.

Have you ever got a quote off the council to get half a dozen kerb stones lowered for access to a garage......?
