Over the last couple of years, one of my favourite cafe runs has become almost unusable. The country lanes I use to get to one of my regular caffs, in Wem, had deteriorated so far as to make riding them on 700c x 25s a nightmare - so I had to desist and frequent alternative sources of tea and cake..
On a lovely sunny afternoon today, en-route to somewhere else, I noticed that as I passed the lane end which was formerly a tank trap, there was recently laid new blacktop laid - not just patching or a coat of chippings - but proper, hot-rolled blacktop - and the road had also been planed beforehand.
So I followed the new ribbon of blacktop - and I had about 3 miles of brand new, billiard-table smooth tarmac, en route to the caff. End of broken road, bruised hands and broken mudguards. Fantastic. Made my day.
So, well done Flintshire CC, or Wrexham BC (it's in that bit of the Marches that has regularly swapped hands for the last millennium - even the OS maps don't seem to know who owns it at any one time). You know who you are, even if the locals don't.
Thank you.
