Don't bother with 'em - if it looks ok and doesn't make you gag it's probably alright.

Whoops - pressed the wrong button.

If it's within a year or two I'll eat it - especially the cheese!

I have some pre-war bars of chocolate in the fridge and am itching to get stuck in - especially the Kit Kat Chocolate Crisp fingers.

Just have to be sensible.
Mrs Ian will throw anything away even if it is one day beyond consume or use by date.

If it hasn't gone off why chuck it. Kind of gets me angry that so much food is wasted in the UK. My wife works at a large department store chain and even the staff are not allowed to take home over the date but perfectly good food (even fruit and veg). All the waste is frozen and sent away to be incinerated or landfilled. Having spent time in South America and seeing kids in abject poverty suffering from malnutrition it just gets to me a bit. Rant over sorry.

We should have another poll - on whether Dellzeqq will chuck away the old bottle of ketchup he's obviously just found, or throw caution to the winds and lavish it onto his bacon butty...

It depends on what it is and how it has been stored. My grandparents or even my parents didn't have a fridge when they were young and they survived and provided milk for public consumption by keeping cool in a small building where the milk sat in the churns in a concrete sort of bath of water. Now a days we seem to have moved to even refrigerating jam.

However there are some food that can produce toxins that you can't see, so its best to be aware of what the potential risks are with each food item.

I like buying short-dated fruit like pineapples, mangoes, avocados half price, knowing it'll still be several days before it's edible.

FTFY.
Memo to self: finish off the Roquefort before DZ comes past on the next FNRTTC - especially if it's a Westerly wind...
