MARCH 2026 mobile phone and contactless payments will be increased to unlimited from the current £100.

I know apple already has this but Android phone payments were generally held at £100.

There will be an option to set your own preference as to the limit for contact less.

For me £300 limit should cover almost everything

I don't think Android had any limit in the same way Apple didn't. The card provider may have done but I think Google and Apple acted in the same way and made it limitless to the bank who set it themselves.

I think this is a sensible step as it is (pretty much) always the bank that covers the cost of fraudulent payment but the benefit of setting your own limit is good as my bank does not currently do this. I carry cards which I do not wish to be used at all so setting those for £0 is useful.

Android payments have been set to whatever limit the retailer desires for some time.

I have paid more than £100 (once) using my Android phone.

I don't think you can currently set your own limit.

Paying by phone is the most secure for you and the bank. For this reason I never use my cards or often even carry them.
I have stopped taking my card to the local supermarkets, and use my phone instead.

I’ve given up carrying my cards too, I just rely on my phone. In more remote areas I also carry a few notes as an emergency backup but it’s years since I’ve ever needed cash.
My local takeaway only accepts cash at the counter, but I hardly use them these days. Apart from them, cash is rarely needed.

Having said that... @Littgull and I used an Uber taxi to get back to Bradford from our friend's funeral on Monday. Neither of us have Uber accounts set up so we had to pay the fare in cash, but neither of us was carrying any. Fortunately, I was carrying my bank card that day so I got the driver to stop near an ATM on the way. Can ATMs connect to banking apps on phones?

As for limits on contactless... I will leave mine set at £100. It is extremely rarely that I would spend more than that and on those occasions I will use the pass code.
