Ok, picture this scene. I'm sitting in the cab of an artic in a queue of traffic. I see a cyclist approaching from behind me as I begin to move. He's clearly going to ride up the inside of my trailer, between the kerb and the truck. I didn't particularly want to encourage him to ride there (it's a very dangerous place to be), but equally, I didn't want to block him. So I pulled out from the kerb a bit and stopped until he'd gone past.
I felt afterwards that perhaps I should have hed a quick word with him, just to let him know that he may well get squished one day riding like that. What do others think?

Good observation RT!!

I'm HGV, but not bendy ones!, and would on occasions do what this cyclist did....I think if you spoke to me, I'd concur with what you said, but if I choose to ride up the inside, it's my decision.....I'd do it ONLY with the KNOWLEDGE that I was clear to do so...i.e. I'd be through BEFORE you moved the truck....

So, don't have any guilt about this...

RT, I think it would be a good idea to have a word if it could be done without sounding loud or angry. However, human nature being what it is, there will be some who may not appreciate the advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would if you reasonably could have done, i.e. if he's stopped a bit further up or you can catch up in your lorry and pull up in front of him, then yes... if it's going to involve running hell for leather down the road to catch up with him and/or leaving your lorry in a bad position though then don't bother.

I would have said something. But, done it in a way that sounded polite, and only if he was sat infront of me at some lights.
Said something like "Excuse me, you know that you put yourself into a dangerouse position then? Its best not go undertake a HGV"
If he got annoyed by it then would of just closed the window and leave him to it.

As Joe says, but add that you are a cyclist yourself and know the dangers etc.

sure I remeber HGVs with a sticker on the outside corner that said 'pass' and one the inside corner that said 'die', something like that anyway

Theres no right answer here. Rythm Thief, you acted reasonably and with care, good for you! Whether or not the cyclist would have responded well to your comments... Well, its hard to say. Might have done, might not have done.

You should have set off the tipper!

Sometimes when i was working for Lewisham rubbish collection we'd do that to tosser drivers who were tailgating us or other such foolishness. Wait for a set of lights with them sat behind us, then let the tipper up a few degrees, normally sorted them out!

Wasn't an HGV though!
