Converting Carerra TDF

Hi,

My mates just given me a Carerra TDF that's been in his back garden for a year. I don't know much about road bikes, just that I want to make it single speed (especially as it's got no cassette and the gear levers are probably broke).

Will this work with the bike?

Also, some advice on a crankset to go with it would be good.

I'm using the bike as a commuter in London. It's a completely flat 20 minute ride.
