Because you can! I'll be getting in my car very shortly and driving 60 odd miles:sad:

Today I rode into work. Similarly to Glasgow, there was some frost, no ice, and must have been around 0°C. I wore one long-sleeved base layer, trousers, one pair of socks, buff. No overshoes, no extra socks, no jacket.
Its not cold yet. Save wimping out for -10° or below, and for biting northerly winds.

10 miles and I got into work at 6.30am. It was all good, the thought of the ride was worse than the ride itself (which was actually quite refreshing and satisfying). Temp was about 0-1 deg C but felt milder after the first mile or so.

You've probably already made the decision by now but I'd just say for future reference that if you can pick a route that is likely to have been gritted, go for it. I cycled into Glasgow today (and all of last week) on a road bike with 25mm tyres.

Road surface considerations aside, it's not that cold provided you're wearing a pair of winter gloves and something to cover your ears (at least those are the bits that I find feel coldest). The rest of you will be fine and warm within 5 minutes of setting off.

I wish i had cycled in today, first day in about a week there has been no ice just frost and only some ice where water gathers, hopefully get on it at some point this week :bicycle:

Great ride in this morning, no ice, no snow .... just a light frost ^_^ .... and the occasional pile of grit and some new (and growing daily) potholes.

Road bike would have been fine but I can understand the hesitation.

Me to, I it is not too bad for the weather but could not cycle is as I have to go to the dentists and could not cycle there from work in time. Plus there is no where to lock the bicycle, errrr and the motorbike has heated grip!

^ This, unless you have ice tyres. I wouldn't recomend riding if there is a chance of ice, just not worth it. I cheat these days, and crack out the ice bike early. Not been on the fixed road bike for a couple of weeks now.

Would my Audax be better suited to icy conditions?
