Convince me to cycle into work tdy

I quite fancy walking my commute next time there is ice, it would give me a rare opportunity to test my ipod.

Iv just woke up , it's 0 degrees ( though it looks like theirs no frost - I'm in glasgow ) it's a road bike ill b on with 25 mm tyres, good idea or bad ( my car is outside btw )

well i wimped out ,took the car and thoroughly wished i cycled ,it turned out really nice ,had all my gear on early and took a decision for the car ,i was kicking myself during the day

My only concern would be cycling in when there is no ice or frost but having sleet/snow and then cold temps by the time i leave work and having to deal with ice in the darkness

bright sunshine, no wind... What's not to like? Temperature is just a matter of kit choice.

Would my Audax be better suited to icy conditions?

There is a school of thought that a fixed is better in ice as you can control speed without using the brakes, but I won't be signing up for that

Good frost round here and the road i use had not been gritted so i was wheel spinning as i put power down up a short incline, scarey on 23mm tyres on unlit lanes .Some ice all the way across the road as well , its given out colder in the morning so its either the MTB or stick to the main roads although it means cycling a lot further along a shared cycle/path that was white over and chancing the rat run for lorries .

I usually let it fall below freezing before I leave the road bike and depending on the route how far I let it fall is more of an issue. I've commuted on busy main roads, I'd let it fall further but on quieter side roads I'd only let it fall by a degree; I'd also factor into thing my terrain and try to avoid downhills/ bends.

It was a lovely day for a cycle. Actually yesterday was too. Mind, the occasional ice patches are still about, so I stick with the ice bike, even though yesterday I took Boris the hybrid with semi slicks to town.

The predawn light and no wind made up for the chilly conditions - don't know what I will do next year once I have burned of the insulating layer of lard!

Best way to avoid the cold - down gear, spin up and stay slow. 20+mph wind chill is nasty, but stay at high revs in a low gear will keep the body warm without too much wind. I passed people in shorts this morning!!

Lots of ice out today, and it only peaked above zero degrees for an hour or two in the middle of the day, so I took the MTB. I drop the pressures down to 25psi rear, 20psi front and it feels much more planted to the ground than the road bikes.

I only have a short commute so can't really justify the cost of studded tires, and haven't had any issues yet.
