For close passes in my experience the hierarchy goes dumper trucks > BMW/Audi/Merc > WVM > other cars > HGVs. Of the other cars the Vauxhall/Clio chavs with loud exhausts and lots of bling tend to give me enough room but the passengers are more likely to lean out the window and shout something that, owing to wind and doppler effects, usually sounds like cuuuuwwaanneeekeedhhead.

Do these cars get a special permit issued by the DVLA to drive daft?

Too many close calls to mention involving these cars.

Since all of the above are generally driven by new drivers you'd think that the Highway Code would be foremost in their minds - not so.

I passed my test in 1992 and can still remember a lot in the Highway Code.

I drive a V6 Rover 75 and are perfectly able of giving cyclists plenty of room, why not these small car drivers?

This is similar to my theory, with me it`s bloody people carriers and any Peugoet, Renault, and Citroen (sorry to any that own one) that seems to be the biggest pain in the backside on our roads....don`t know why tho:wacko: The theory always seems to fit

You'd think that the Audi/BMW/Mercedes-Benz drivers would give a little more consideration due to those marques generally possessing very expensive-to-replace door mirrors.

I have to say that I agree with the OP in that I seem to have experienced more in the way of close shaves with small cars. Strange really because a small car such as a Saxo is no doubt narrower than, say, a BMW 5 series so won't need to drive as close to the curb to stay on the correct side of the road. Go figure...

Out on my run yesterday I got the best non overtake from 4x4 bmw. He waited patiently behind me for quite a while and when he had the opportunity to overtake he didn't take it. He was turning left but there was ample distance before the left turn but he still held back. Just goes to show stereotypes aren't always true.

Maybe they're so small they struggle to see over the dashboard.

You'll find the Highway Code has changed a few times since then. It's best to keep up with it, really. You don't even have to pay for it any more.

I was beginning to think that BMW drivers have 'sixth sense' and can spot a fellow BMW driver (and make special allowances) I guess kind of like an in built version of a gaydar... as everyone seemed to moan about them, I have had nothing but nice wide passes and patience from them... its good to know they/we seem to be losing the crown of biggest nob heads on the road [deep sigh... mops brow in relief]

My biggest problem is 4x4's particularly discovery's on narrow lanes, which is ironic as they are off road vehicles yet owners wont even consider going up the verge to pass safely like most other smaller more ill suited cars!
