Council’s Grit Response to Snow

See if you can guess which one of the following services Richmond Council has managed to maintain during the recent “weather event”:

a) To grit any local roads

 To keep the education service up and running

c) To grit any cycle paths or foot paths

d) To make any rubbish/recycling collections

e) To answer the telephone

f) To get parking enforcement officers out and ticketing

loathe though I am to in any way defend the usual council incompetence, the parking wardens are likely to be sent out by a private company...

You indicate that for all the bleating of local government workers, that they are in fact fairly feckless, and display a cavalier attitude to the jobs they (are supposed to) out of the public purse.

Given their feeble response to the snow of the last few days in the schools, it should be questioned what they do with their time once they have decided to give themselves the day off under the most flaccid of excuses.

It took the piss that some London schools were still closed yesterday. I walked past one school just off the Kingsland Road which was closed, the small side street it was on was completely iced. It wasn't a long stretch of road, and the roads nearby were all clear.
Saying that they have to be closed because the playground is iced is a lame excuse, just keep the kids inside...
If anything, the headmaster should be clearing the road him/herself...

I see this sort of crap directed at the railways virtually every week so I wont comment on something I don't know a lot about.

I could only guess the keyword "money" being involved here as in my job.

If anything, the headmaster should be clearing the road him/herself...

This sums it up doesn't it?

I fear this is a result of our sheepish following of our US cousins down the litigation path. I guees the school will not open if there is any chance of child being injured in the school playground by ice that has not being cleared.

In no way am I trying to defend Richmond Council who, to my mind, have completely lost the plot lately.

Strange how the privately run school at the end of my street managed to open every day this week....

Our council cateogrically state on their website they will not help schools and are not gritting anything other than A roads. 15 of us spent nearly 4 hours clearing the snow so the in/out drive could be used today. We also cleared a path to the front door and from the fire exits into the playground. The paths and the road leading up to the school were completely iced over yesterday and without question there would have been accidents. We are more than happy to look after the children and keep them safe (whilst enjoying some fun) when in school but surely the council have to do their bit to make it relatively safe for people to get there. I for one do not want to responsible for opening the school and then finding even just one child has been badly injured due to a fall or, out of control car. It's about balanced risk our school would have been foolish to open yesterday and I know of some local schools who regret their opening today due to very near misses.

Couldn’t agree with you more – I walked my three to school this morning – the whole route was just sheet ice – we pretty much had to hold onto walls, garden fences, gates etc for the entire route, (whilst dodging all the bin bags, recycling boxes and dog shoot assault course) or we would have all gone over several times.
No gritting, no collections, no help, just loads of parking enforcement officers…

I think our council gritted A road. Which one is anyone's guess.
