At my local dump the staff put all bikes aside to sell on for personal gain. That doesn't really bother me as it means the bikes are at least being given another chance. Not everyone agrees and on a recent trip I saw a guy put a half-decent MTB into the metals area having cut through the frame with an angle grinder so that "those council lackies don't steal it".
You're dumping it ya nobber!

Can we just revisit the original post a second; someone has thrown away a gleaming road bike, aero wheels, all components?

I don't want this gleaming road bike anymore so I'm just taking it to the tip, want me to get rid of that Rolex and those spare Macs while I'm there, in fact could you give me a lift back because I'm leaving my sports car too as it's a bit low on fuel and it's got some dead insects stuck to the front.

IPeople dump all sorts of perfectly good stuff.

And the OP lives in prosperous Berkshire which may make dumping valuable stuff more likely.

Going back late at night to retrieve it is not a good idea, the tip will almost certainly be well covered by CCTV.

Which is also why it's not a good idea to dump stuff at the gate when the place is shut.

A prosecution for flytipping will follow if they can trace you from the footage.

Our tip also refuses to put stuff back into circulation at all. I asked about a nice looking junior size road frame a couple of years back but apparently my council's rules are once it is dumped it is considered to be scrap and not safe/viable any more. They didn't entertain the notion of buyer beware or even passing them on to charity - they just go towards the municipal recycling target that they have posted up everywhere. Nice to see that some places are more enlightened and will pass them onto worthy causes.

as for a nice bike being dumped - theres lots of one ride wonders quietly rusting away out there. I put a wanted ad on our works intranet a while back for a roadie to fettle, not expecting much response but I I was inundated with offers from people who had perfectly servicable, almost unused bikes that they'd be happy to be rid of for the shed space.

I took a broken telly to the tip once. When I asked where to put it the worker asked me whether it was working or broken. I expressed some incredulity at the idea of bringing a working one to the tip so he showed me the two different piles. People dump all sorts of perfectly good stuff.

Some people are getting extremely rich by simply refurbishing electrical goods taken from the council dumps. I don't know what the financial arrangement is.

ahhh.. in the good old days, council dumps were the places where you picked up old bikes. No one minded you taking them then.

My dad used to come back from the tip with more rubbish than he took, many a time he lowered me into a container to get something.

I took a load of junk to the tip and one of the staff insisted on helping me to unload it.

I offered him a couple of quid for his trouble, which he refused.

Taking money was a big no-no, he told me.

Not to be beaten, on my next visit I took a large jar of instant coffee and some biscuits, having seen the staff using stuff like that in their cabin.

That gift was gratefully accepted, so honour was satisfied all round.
