Im an ex police officer. Wherever I could have a laugh with the public I did and wherever I could help I did. If you think of what a policemans day consists of, it is good to lighten the mood. Usually it is full of death messages, sudden deaths, fights, drunk domestic disputes and trying to find toe rags and villains.

Apart from the police officers on here. I wonder if anyone else socially knows any police officers. They have a great black humour. Im surprised that a book of policemans tales has never been written. It would be a Real eye opener.
But there have been books of 'autobiographies' by retired police. I read several many years ago, but 'fraid can't recall the authors.^_^

My mate at work told me of a recent incident down the Mile End Road.Apparently he got stopped by a copper and told off for not using the cycle lane.

Then the copper told him don't worry the (new) cycle lane has only been open for an hour. They aren't all bad by a long chalk.:okay:
I thought cyclists aren't obliged to use cycle lanes (UK). Are there places where they are mandatory (again, in the UK)?

My cousin was an Inspector.
I've known a few Police over the years...working night shift in a hospital we'd get to know them and how many sugars they took
The humour is required in that line of work, as with any emergency service workers.
Maybe thats why I got on so well with firemen, police.....or it could just be the uniform

Years ago we used to work for a charity offering respite care for difficult and disadvantaged kids. Some of our team were opolice cadets from
M Hendon

We were at Kimbolton and had use of the school's swimming pool

On this particular day we had two of the Senior Instructors had come up to do evaluations

Anyway we had 50 kids to cross road and had put out two staff to stop traffic. Muppet in Chavriolet pulls up sounding horn and telling us to get out of his way

The Hendon instructor walks over and simy states "Bit of s w@nker aren't we"

Then when Muppet asks "Who the F*** he thinks he is, introduces himself as a Chief Inspector and asks Muppet if he really wishes to continue

It was a " magic moment"as these kids had a poor view of the Met, but thought this guy was really cool

No, though confusingly "mandatory cycle lanes" do exist in the UK (identified by a solid demarcation line rather than the usual dashed one).

But the "mandatory" here refers to the fact that cars are required to stay out of them, rather than cycles being required to use them.

There's no such thing as a compulsory cycle lane.

I knew that.:okay: One night on finishing work in SW London I was cycling up a backstreet towards Chancery Lane but unbeknown to me the road was closed off due to the workmen digging a big hole which took up half the road,So as nothing was going up or down closed off road.I ran into a bad tempered policeman who asked me if I had seen the sign.I admitted I had and wondered what was going to happen next.Suddenly he just let me go.Must admit I was surprised.

My sister was a Police Officer and pulled over a suspected drunk driver. He was really unsteady on his feet, trapping himself in the door several times as he was trying to close it before he'd got fully out but couldn't seem to work out what was going wrong.

Despite giving him several goes, he couldn't maintain a breath long enough to give a sample.

He was pleasant enough, but absolutely refused to give his details. He was terrified about people finding out as it could affect his business.

It wasn't the drunk driving bit, it was the inability to carry out the breath test.

Turns out he was a children's entertainer specialising in balloon animals and balloon tricks.

I have two neighbours who are or were PCs. One resigned recently after a cycling accident caused when he passed out, which put a question mark on his career, though I think that was just the straw that broke the camel's back. He always struck me as a typical disenchanted copper, quietly self-confident, but with, yes, a black sense of humour and a world-weary manner..

The second is Asian and, I suspect, will go a long way in the Police. He is incredibly astute and only needs to ask two questions to get to the nub of any matter. He is deeply principled and correct and knows the law inside-out. He doesn't take part in pally humour, which might be something he needs to work on.
