Has anyone ever had a rim with cracks like those in the OP collapse?
When it's happened to my wheels, what happens in the end is that the eyelets start to pull through the rim, the spoke loses tension, and the wheel goes out of true. All very non-dramatic.

It depends, if the cracks have propagated enough there is a chance that the wheel crack open along the split. If the split is big enough the wheel would collapse as there will be too few spokes supporting the wheel at that point.

The thing with aluminium wheels is that they have a finite life time, any cracks are an indication that they have reached the limit of that life time and should be changed.

I wouldn't want to chance it.

I had one go like that. I bought a low cost rim and rebuilt it using the original hub and spokes. It's still my spare back wheel. The rim and an old tyre is my test bed for any repaired tubes, but I haven't needed it for some time. In my case the cracking on the inside is a bit worse than on the outside so for its present use I put an oversized rim tape in.

If you don't know how to rebuild a wheel this could be your golden opportunity to learn!

Non-dramatic or not - would you want it happening at 50 mph, or even 30 mph in traffic ?

I've had a rim explode as it was worn. Doing about 20 mph round a roundabout, and a quarter of the rear rim blew off, locking the wheel up. I was able to skid to the side, but it's not something you'd want to happen at speed.

It's not worth the risk, or your teeth.

Beejesus, the rim has had it. Replace asap. Why would you want to risk your safety your life riding a knackered wheel? Just not worth it. For the replacement go for Mavic Open Pro CD rims with 105 hubs or above (see other thread). They are far superior to Fulcrum 5. I never had any rim crack like the ones in this thread as I always had hand built wheels built by good wheel builders. Some pairs of wheels I have on Mavic Open Pro CD rims are nearly 20 years old and still going strong. Looks to me from the pics above that the spokes have been over tightened at some point leading to the cracking.

I simply cannot understand how this thread has reached two pages of debate. There is only one answer to the OP - the rim has had it and will fail spectacularly sooner rather than later.

I junked an Aksium rim a few years ago when I discovered the beginnings of a crack round one spoke hole. Get rid today.

Yeah, but you just had to add your penny's worth to make it even longer …… ;)
